Anti-Bias Education in Montessori

Thank you to everyone who participated in Britt Hawthorne's two day workshop at Montessori Northwest! Together we built an understanding of Anti-Bias Education framework of:

  1. Self-Love 2. Embrace People 3.Identify Unfairness 4. Act Justly

Each plane of development can work though this framework with conversations, materials, and activities that are designed to meet the needs and characteristics of the learners in that particular age group. The most important thing is that regardless of the age group, we start with Self-Love. Yes, even with adults :)

The second day, Britt was joined by local 3-6 and 6-12 practitioners Ana VanderPol; Keinya Kohlbecker, Zil Jaeger, and Ali Sullivan, who shared songs, specific activities, and materials to use in the classroom with primary and elementary aged learners. A huge shout out to Ana, Keinya, Zil, and Ali for their wonderful and inspiring ideas!

Britt describes the Four Goals of an Anti-Bias education framework.

Ana displays self-portraits drawn by her class.
