AMI Teacher Training Programs

MNW will prepare you for a life-changing career in Montessori education

AMI Montessori teacher training is recognized throughout the world as the very best preparation there is. The quality of our graduates reflects the quality of our training: knowledgeable and compassionate, with a teaching practice grounded in a thorough understanding of Montessori principles and child development. AMI teacher certification identifies you as a teacher of the highest quality.

Studying with MNW is a transformative experience. AMI training breaks down what great teachers do intuitively into an intentional process you can master to practice education as transformation. The children you guide find their path in life and are truly capable of creating a better world for themselves and others.

“In the world of Montessori training, Montessori Northwest is a leader in both the quality of their educational programs and the mindful approach of their diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Their offerings, from full trainings to workshops of all kinds, bring immense value to the Montessori communities in Portland, Northern California, and beyond. At Marin Montessori School, we have enjoyed having a number of MNW graduates join our faculty. And, even more of us have grown as teachers and administrators by participating in MNW workshops. The enriching work that happens at Montessori Northwest ultimately makes us better Guides for our students, helping us to support the healthy development of more children and families. I am so grateful for this champion of authentic Montessori education.”

Blended Training Format

A lot has changed in AMI Training, but the essentials have not. At MNW, we are still committed to the highest standards in Montessori teacher preparation, our training is still transformative, fun, a lot of work, and most importantly, inspiring.

Blended training combines in-person blocks in the training center’s prepared environment with distance learning blocks via Zoom. The onsite and distance blocks are organized a little differently for each program, but all include the same depth of theory, lively, meticulous presentations of materials, and community building.

Nearly all of the guided practice hours required by AMI are conducted onsite in the prepared environment, but in the blended programs, learners can also continue working in their classrooms while training. This experience brings the theory to life in a very tangible way, and provides additional practice with materials extending the “practicum” aspects of the program.

  • The Blended Program is a strong and supportive online community. Strong bonds of friendship and professional relationships develop during weekly, virtual classes, online discussion forums, and three immersive in-person sessions. Faculty members create a culture of collaboration by facilitating opportunities for learners to practice presentations together, share resources and experiences with one another, and work cooperatively on assignments.

MNW learners receive personalized, individual feedback during guided practice sessions in person and virtually. MNW Faculty carefully review weekly written assignments, providing timely feedback and continuous support to all learners.

In addition to connecting interpersonally, learners connect intrapersonally, gaining an Anti-Bias Anti-Racist foundation by embarking on a journey of physical, mental, and spiritual preparation. This work begins with understanding the role of the adult in the Montessori method: to connect the child with culturally responsive environments that reflect children of the world. Throughout the program, learners reflect on their identities, biases, and other factors that will impact their abilities to offer an Anti-Racist, Anti-Bias education for all children.

  • Just like the traditional academic year program, the blended format requires learners to dive deeply into Montessori theory, create high-quality digital albums, practice presentations, observe and practice teach in local classrooms. Our graduates enter the classroom prepared to provide high-caliber Montessori education.

  • The structure of the Blended program format was designed to suit a variety of individuals and increase the accessibility of AMI training. It offers a combination of face-to-face, online, and distance learning. During the distance blocks of this training, learners self-schedule time to study and practice with materials around their other responsibilities.

Learners also observe and practice teach in Montessori schools that are local to them, creating opportunities to form relationships with potential employers. This low residency model significantly decreases the cost of training by saving you money on travel and housing expenses, while affording you opportunities to work while you train.

  • The Blended Program’s Directors of Training utilize up-to-date e-learning techniques creating an engaging student experience. An online learning platform is the foundation of these dynamic programs; students access articles, recorded presentations, videos, and more. Throughout the blended program, learners can revisit the content and deepen their understanding with additional resources.

Learners' engagement is multi-sensory. Learners read Montessori's writing as well as more contemporary research and publications, write reflections and original essays, engage in group discussions, watch recorded presentation demonstrations, practice presentations with materials, and create annotated illustrations. Learners engage with and reflect on ABAR content including TED talks, articles, podcasts, and discussion boards. In the live, virtual class sessions, trainers provide opportunities for interaction using breakout rooms, masterclass-style practice sessions, and other techniques to ensure the utmost learner engagement.
